The Dutch controlled much of the shipping that passed between western and eastern Indonesia and today it is still a thriving port.
After our trip to Tana Toraja, we visited Fort Rotterdam. It is an impressive reminder of strong Dutch influence. The site was the place where the Gowa port was built.
Prince Diponegoro of Yogyakarta led the Java War (1825-30) but his career as a rebel leader was put to a stop when he was tricked by the Dutch that there would be negotiation for peace but he was taken prisoner and then exiled to Fort Rotterdam.
The Bugis are known for their magnificent sailing ships called called perahu that trade extensively Indonesian archipelago.
